These type of systems were introduced to Ireland by Dr. Oliver Tully of B.I.M, (presently Marine Institute) at Carna where extensive research was conducted with a one tonne limit during 2007/2008.
Depur Systems Ltd were encouraged by B.I.M. to design and build a larger unit which would overcome the problems experienced at Carna and being based in Ireland would make maintenance easily accessible.
The system consists of eight stacks of nineteen trays, each holding 20/25 K.G. of lobsters. The holding units stands over a 20m3 sump and water is supplied (chilled to 2-3oc) through a re-fridgeration system using heat exchangers and filtered through fluid beds and activated charcoal.
